Activating Downtown Dallas II Now Underway!

We’re excited to announce a new project in Downtown Dallas!

Along with our partner Downtown Dallas Inc., we’re starting on round two of Activating Vacancy: Downtown Dallas (AVDD II) in Pegasus Plaza at 1500 Main Street.

Pegasus Plaza is a stone’s throw from Dallas’s famed Giant Eyeball. The Plaza is a large, shaded space that has the capacity to host a range of activities beyond its current usage. Plus, its proximity to the new AT&T Discovery District, the new Smart Cities Incubator in the historic West End district, and a lively commercial strip on Main Street offers the opportunity to redesign this urban space to better serve community needs.

Throughout 2020, we will lead a community-engaged design process to create temporarily-installed infrastructure in Pegasus Plaza, which will set the stage for activities that foster social cohesion among the downtown Dallas community -- residents, workers, and visitors alike.

We will set the stage by first creating a physical space in the Plaza for activation, storage, electricity, lighting, and other components to support an art exhibition or performance. Then, we will activate this space by facilitating design-related programming throughout the project. We will also pair two community-based groups with artists/arts groups to each implement programming.

Building off lessons learned through the first iteration of the Activating Vacancy Downtown Dallas project, AVDD II will allow us to study how hyper locally-focused public space programming can foster meaningful interactions among the Downtown community, which may complement the larger planned public space development.

This project was supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). To find out more about the National Endowment for the Arts visit www.arts.gov.
