The Dolphin Heights Neighborhood Association, a long-time partner of [bc], is raising money to build a cottage for a resident gardener to live and work onsite in its community garden. When the goal is met, [bc] will leverage a community design process with DHNA to design and build a 450 square foot cottage at the back of the garden.

As Ms. Hill says, "Dolphin Heights is in need of fresh, nutritious food—and the garden has the potential to serve the community far more than it currently does. With a gardener living on site, residents, especially children, will benefit from hands-on educational activities with seed-growing and eating fresh fruits and vegetables."

Once onsite, the gardener will provide garden maintenance and offer educational opportunities to increase the amount of produce available to the neighborhood and also grow resident interaction with the garden. Ms. Hill already has a couple of people in mind and is ready for her cottage!

When complete, the program will benefit Dolphin Heights residents by:

  • Providing an opportunity for training and reduced rent for a local resident

  • Offering educational opportunities surrounding gardening and nutritious food for Dolphin Heights

  • Being a small source of income for DHNA (provided through the gardener’s rent)

  • Improving health through increased access to and education ongardening and eating nutritious foods

Since launching the campaign in December, we have received $5,000 from the State Fair of Texas Foundation to support the project as well as over $4,000 in individual donations to the crowdfunding campaign. We invite you to contribute and/or share the opportunity with your friends and family today! Each donation truly makes a difference.
